Centreville High School has started another year of music excellence. Last spring, Centreville High School achieved the honor of being designated a “Blue Ribbon School” by the Virginia Music Educators’ Association for their achievement of superior rating by the three advanced groups of choir, band and orchestra. Students, teachers, and parents are already hard at work to repeat this honor. Our Band, Orchestra, Guitar and Choral groups are preparing to perform at football games, national competitions and school concerts. You can Help! On Saturday, October 15th, music students and adult volunteers will be in our neighborhoods, going door to door, talking with neighbors, requesting donations to support the music department. Your tax-deductible contribution will enable the music department to purchase uniforms, instruments, equipment, special music, and first-class guest instructors. In appreciation of your generous contribution, a Family Invitation will be included - to a Band, Orchestra, Guitar or Choral performance of your choice during the 2016-2017 school year. Thank you for your generous support of the Centreville High School Music Department!
At the June 13, 2016 annual meeting and Choir Department Banquet, the following Choral Booster Board officers were elected for the 2016-2017 school year: Sandy Donlon, President Marian Coronado, Vice President – Volunteers Helen Martin, Vice President – Fundraising Netra Karandikar, Treasurer Sherri Walter, Trip Treasurer Maria Marmol, Publicity Alice McGinty, Secretary CHOIR PARENT “MEET N’GREET” MEETING Welcome to the 2016-17 school year, and to the CVHS Choral Department! ALL choir parents are invited to the first Choir Booster meeting of the school year, the annual choir parent “Meet N’Greet”. This meeting will be held on Monday, September 19, from 7:00 - 8:00 pm in the room at CVHS - room 119. For those parents who are new to the department, it is especially important for you to attend if you can. ANY parent who has a student in the CVHS choir program is a Choir Booster Parent - therefore, this meeting pertains to ALL of you! To access the choir room, enter the school through door #13 (the entrance which is farthest to the right as you are standing in front of the school), take a left once inside that entrance, and continue down the hall to room 119 on your right. The agenda for the “Meet N’Greet” is as follows: - Introductions of Mrs. Babcock and the Choir Booster Board - Overview of the CVHS choir program - Remarks from the Booster Board president, Sandy Donlon - Q&A - Dessert, coffee and tea will be served. We hope to see you all there. This is an important meeting in that it covers all the expectations and opportunities for the choral students for the entire year. This is NOT a night to discuss curriculum - that is covered during Back-To-School night. However, there is so much more that goes on in the choral program that it is necessary to have this meeting before Back-To-School night in order to cover all aspects of the program. Please calendar this meeting in if at all possible. We look forward to seeing you on September 19!
Choral Cabaret - which is usually in February - has been moved to May 16 to work around Beauty and the Beast and District Chorus.Congrats to the entire cast, crew and orchestra of Beauty and the Beast for a wonderful show and to the talented singers performing at Districts this weekend! Auditions for Choral Cabaret are Tuesday, March 24 at 2:30 pm. Auditions will be held in the choir room and you must sign up in advance to audition. You will be auditioned in the order that you sign up. Sign up in consecutive order - do not skip time slots. Take the next time slot available on the sheet. Here are the audition rules:
- The accompanist(s) performing with you MUST be at the audition.
- CD accompaniments must be just instrumental without any vocals whatsoever. If there are any vocals on the CD, you will be disqualified.
- If you are using CD accompaniment, make sure that you try it out on the stereo in the choir room a few days before the audition.
- You must be available on Saturday, May 16 to rehearse that morning anywhere between 8:00 am and 12:00 pm (time to be determined). Your accompanist must also be available then as well.
- If you are using a CD accompaniment, please leave it with Mrs. Babcock after you have auditioned. Your name and the name of your song must be written on the CD. There should not be anything else on the CD but song that you are singing for Choral Cabaret.
- You need to know the composer of your song. Remember, the group/solo singer that recorded the song is not always the composer.
- Ballads (slow songs) are not best for Choral Cabaret. Choose an upbeat or medium tempo song.
- If you audition with multiple songs, you might only get chosen to sing one - whichever is judged to be your best performance, and which works best with the rest of the acts being programmed.
- Be prepared, at a future date to be announced, to bring your audition outfit for approval by Mrs. Babcock. Women who are planning on accompanying themselves at the piano, or sitting on a stool to perform, MUST wear dresses that are calf-length or longer, OR slacks.

The Virginia Senior Honors Choir is a highly select Honor Choir consisting of seniors from around the state who compete in a rigorous audition each year in October, which takes place at Longwood University. Our three delegates this year are: Nancy Brittain, Karsten Kim, and Jin Young Lee. We also had two students who were chosen as alternates (these students step in if someone is sick or has to drop the choir for any reason). Those alternates are Kayla Ebright and Alex de la Rosa. Congratulations! The highest scoring seniors from all over the state are chosen as delegates to this choir. The choir always rehearses and performs during the third weekend in November at the Virginia Music Educators' State Conference. The singers work with a nationally recognized conductor for the three days of the event. Honors Choir is the finale of the entire Conference - it is a major event, and quite an honor for the singers. It is a wonderful opportunity for the students to work with other singers from around the state who have the same high level of musical ability, as well as the same passion for and commitment the choral art.
